Although I can only relate on a small scale, I have to agree with Casey Morell that "broadening peoples horizons" is a rewarding part of journalism.
A part of everyday life, especially when meeting new people, is discussing viewpoints and facts. It feels great to open someone's eyes to a point of view they had never thought of before or even to introduce them to a surprising new fact. Regardless of whether or not your intention is to change their minds, it's rewarding to see the person process the fact you've given them and apply it to what they had previously known. This happens in everyday conversations, but it is a foundation for what journalism is.
